17th December 2009 - Satterthwaite

6 turned up at Satterthwaite on this cold evening but which route? we headed north through the village and right up Breasty Haw, this is a rewarding climb, i.e. tough but it leads onto a great section of single track and a testing descent down to the road. Now turn left and head for the climb with the aim of finding the stone fox, only we took the wrong turn and Neil and CT were left behind to navigate alone, now in the darkness you may think it possible to stop and look for the other riders lights and noise, but NO it was dark and quiet, so we re-traced our steps and found the off-road route to the fox, only no sign of the others. A lucky mobile phone call brought the others back, they had stayed on the fire road which eventually comes out at the fox (as long as you do not tee off on the side roads!) now we headed to Moor top, then down the north face, (NF) BUT it was icy and the timber sections were v'slippy, as CT came flying off and Grant had to do an emergency stop! So we decided to head along the fire road to the centre and then climb up the NF, this was not too bad as the timber sections have been removed, at the top it was cold, so off we headed looking for the best route back to the cars, now Grant & CT were at the back trying to warm up and the others took the first fire-road while we looked at the NF route but noticed no tyre tracks? again a mobile was brought into action to re-group.....bloody group rides...! Now it was v'cold with frozen gears so we looked for the shortest route back and headed down towards the centre and then took the fire roads back to the descent down Moor Lane, Charlie's lights were going out, but she manfully battled on! some where down Moor lane while CT was trying to offer some headlight in the direction of the trail to aid Charlie's Super-light, someone (no names BGB) made an overtaking manoeuvre through a gap which was a little too narrow (he's wider than he thinks he is!!) and clipped Charlies pedal, causing a big OFF, battered and bruised she carried on and we all made in to the bottom in one piece. V'cold so a quick change and into the pub, where they were just finishing some carols with live music, we had mulled wine to warm up and chilli crisps. The bikes had frozen up, or at least the mud splattered from the lower routes had frozen higher up, it was cold. Next planned ride is 7th Jan' 2010 Ings. HAPPY NEW YEAR

10th December 2009 - Troutbeck

8 turned up at the small lay-by church bridge A592 on this freezing night, anyone travelling from the Kendal side had a de-tour along the Ings-Troutbeck road as a truck had gone off the road! This short delay meant Paul could fettle his brakes, they just needed some slight adjustment...with a hammer! Now setting off go past the church up the bridleway to the post office then on up Robin lane, a slight rest towards the top and then onwards to Jenkin Crag and the tester rocky descent, apparently GA found the one pot hole and came off head over 'eels! Re-group at the bottom, sort of, someone waited for the others, they had already shot off along the main road, so a short delay while we all caught up and met up at the bottom of Mirk Lane. This is a good hill climb test and doubly so now the recent water erosion has had an effect, but you have to give it a go, not a bad effort and its hard work all the way up to Holbeck Lane. A chance of a little flap-jack, cheers JB. Now just the last climb upto Robin lane and then the descent to Troutbeck PO, when CT, GA & JP got to the junction no one was around so we took the direct route back to the cars to find no one,so we waited and chatted, eventually the others turned up as they had gone a different way! next time they should leave chalk marks if no-one mans a junction!! Too cold to stay around, no pub we'll wait until next week which will be at Satterthwaite because we can do parts of Grizedale and there's a pub for a pre-Christmas drink, bring money and clothes! PS: Beware of freezing temperatures if you have external luggage locks on your pick-up, just ask Paul!

3rd December 2009 - Elterwater for Loughrigg terrace

I think it was 6 turned up, but only 5 went riding (Joel, Charlie, Chris M, Jamie and CT), Grant had broken his SPD and no one could get it off (some thought not enough grease had been used...!) which route...we decided to try Loughrigg in reverse, so still up the first hill climb, a little washed but not too bad, then in front of YHA, past Loughrigg tarn then head up and over Loughrigg fell. This climb is a bit tricky to start but actually is OK towards the top, although the fell was partly illuminated by a strange light from the west shore of Windermere, we had discussed what the light was for, perhaps re-building flood work, or just someone testing some new bike LEDS !, but no it was actually Corrie being filmed in Cumbria, due out on TV soon. Now over the top and down the other side and ride along the river Rothay, head past Rydal water and along to the caves and up the terrace, stopping to sample Joels mega cake, well done JP! once at the top wiz down the bridleway and back to Elterwater, where CT and JP sampled the local beer. Next ride is Troutbeck, park in the layby down from the church.

26th November 2009 - Ings for Garburn-Troutbeck

More heavy rain!

Goerge, Paul, Grant, Joel, Chris M, Jamie and CT met up at Ings and rode up Dubbs to keep away from Kentmere as it was soooo wet, not a bad run up, then at Garburn we turned left and came down, Jamie warning us that the trail maybe eroded/altered so watch out, he was right the large amount of water run off has altered the trails, (see picture taken on Sunday in daylight, it looks like a building site) this was much trickier and most of us walked some of the way down. We headed right through Limefit and then right before the church at Troutbeck and up the testing lane near high fold. Now along the road to Troutbeck PO and up Robin lane, here also signs of water power changing the landscape, onwards to the first bridleway on the left and enjoy small descent to road. Re-group and decide to head along lane past Wain lane and go down past the farm on Mirk Lane, not too bad, near the last section CT was leading with JB chasing, a polite question " want to pass" yes he said and so JB came past, but got caught by a tree root -Ha!-but managed to stay on and keep going with CT chuckling in the background. Down to the main road, where to now? We could head up WL and on to Longmire, so we started out, we could ride the first section lower down, but after a while we needed to walk, due to the changed track (see photo again for the power of water, GA's bike was fully in the ditch, formed by the water, please note that no bike was harmed during the taking of the photo, although GA was flapping about!). Once on the lane take a right hand bridleway down to Trout Beck and cross the foot bridges, only take care there were some large tree trunks resting against the 2nd bridge, now up the track to join the road and head back via the lanes to Ings. A couple of us sampled the beer and Jalapeno flavour crisps !!!!! next ride is Elterwater, bring money for the pub.

12th November 2009 - Gilpin Bridge

5 riders met at the Gilpin, George, Grant, Chris M, Joel and CT. It was the usual route past Raven's Lodge and up the leaf covered rocky slope, where Chris M with dodgy gears snapped a chain, all repaired and over the top to Witherslack Hall and Yewbarrow for the slippy descent to Church Road. A little rain during the ride, so we headed back for the return route, back for 8.30 and two of us had a drink. Next Thursday's ride is optional as some of us are going to the Kendal Mountain Festival bike night. The week after, 26th November, it's Staveley for Kentmere.

5th November 2009 - Far Sawrey for Claiffe

4 ventured out on Guy Fawkes night, Charlie, Ian, Paul (new truck man) and CT, not as snowy as last year...there was NO snow! We hoped to see some firework action, although we realised we would be riding in wooded areas, so we set off for the clockwise route, from the pub take the bridleway next to the phone box and start climbing, this gets us to the top for the great descent down to the lake, there was a bit of standing/running water about but no rain, so off we set, the downhill was great and as well as some fireworks on the opposite shore of Bowness we also had the experience of 2 fast jets bombing along the lake BELOW us! just to add to the rockets and general noise, they tomust have been out checking the fireworks. Then we headed along the shore route and past another group of nite-time bikers going the other way, we continued on the base camp route and started to climb the access road, here we saw another bonfire party by the cottages, very nice and 2 sheep went head to head on the lane determined to get past us and onto the road, we herded then back until they met the cattle-grid, no problem for these sheep, just step in between the rails and walk on, so that's how they go for their late night walks! Continue up the fire road, where the evening was light enough for some of us to turn off our lights and ride by the moon-light, at the same time we saw a deer run out in front of us, always nice to nature alive and well. Onwards to the cross roads and then a left turn to go down the tester route, a bit foggy at this point (always a pain for helmet lights) and at the bottom take the right track back up, always a tester...! Carry on up the track, Ian taking a fire road detour (very sensible) C, P & C trying the rocky route, regroup at the top and head along for the downhill back to the cars. All change and a drink in the pub to discuss light bulbs! Next ride is Gilpin Bridge.

29th Ocober 2009 - Lowick

"It was Dark. First proper winter ride!!

We went on the usual route, checking we were going the right way as went !! Couldn't tell you the details.

22nd October 2009 - Wister

8 riders came out to Winster, one with a new HID and one with new battery, so 3 HIDs, 1 LED and the rest Halogens. Head south from church and look out for the ford, fairly high water so no takers we used the bridge, steady ride up the lane, turn right at Cote Hill and take the right hand track past Green Hill. It was a bit damp but not that cold, short arms Ok with some! Still quite a few puddles and mud at the bottom. Some discussion on route and which is the best downhill, so we took a little detour around Broom Hill and back into the village, past the Brown Horse and take the left turn up the bridleway past Bow Mabble Breast, it was getting damper...very slippy over the top and then round the lanes past Bateman Fold, now take the right then left turn for the climb and descent and back to the cars. Now it had stopped raining and the stars were out, no pub stop and JP just wanted to keep going to test out his new HIDs! Next ride is Lowick.

15th October 2009 - Elterwater to Iron Keld

5 rides came out, Grant, Jamie, Neil, Joel and Chris. The weather looked like rain, but it never did and in fact felt very warm and barmy, we had too many winter clothes for the nice climbs! Head out past the lodges and up to the quarry, then up the testing climb through the trees, it was really a testing walk. Now onto the ford...or was it, JB was allowed to lead out and turned right and round past Bridge End and up and over heading for High Tilberthwaite. This is a testing rocky climb and a great descent, round the bottom and head to the play area (always fun and tricky in the dark), then continue through Hodge Close and High oxen fell cross over the road and up onto Iron Keld, at which point Grant had a puncture and also his lights decided to stop glowing, I think he just wanted to walk UP the climb. Then up and over Iron Keld, at which point I got fed up a shining my head light to help Grant and instead offered him my back up 6v system (don't scoff it works!), so at least he could get home. All back after what turned out to be a warm evening and quite late so no chips and head off home. Next ride is Winster park by the church.

8th October 2009 - Ings for Garburn

In the end 7 turned up to experiance the misty damp conditions; Grant, Joel, Neil, George, Chris M, Jamie and CT, after coaxing JPs lights into action (as they did not seem to work straight after being charged up) we set off for the usual clockwise route, up the lane then go past Dubbs and onto Garburn pass to see how much you can ride before dabbing, usually the first corner or if not then the rocky section...if only it was dry, warm and moon lit, then I'm sure we'll clean it, or at least some of it! Up and over the top ready to enjoy the descent, only not if your initials at GA! Down safely-ish round Kentmere hall and up to 3 rivers, although we only did the one river crossing at the top and headed along to go through the large and deep puddle by the wall, then on and back down the lane to Ings, Chris M nearly having an off while blasting down the track and mis-judging a water jump! All back to the cars and heading home for a change. Next ride is Elterwater.

2nd October 2009 - Barbon

6 turned out for the Barbon hill climb, the day had been sunny, but the sky was clouding over and a chill in the air; I cycled out to get some sort of warm up, worth doing for the climbing of Barbon. When the clouds weren't obscuring it, the moon cast it's light upon us, at least it was not a pitch black sky. We set off for the usual route, up steep tarmac climb, along the road and look for the first left turn for the bridleway, fairly dry and so a good challenge, but still a few dabs. Ride along the flattish track, which was mostly dry and get to the lane to start the climb, we mostly stayed together, chatting about, lights, food and big game hunting! At the next junction, i.e. the start of the next bridleway, CM had set off and some lights were heading up the lan, who could this be, was it Charlie (no never that late!), what about Ian (no he does not have a head mount), so who then...it was a young chap 'Kona' from Kirkby who had beaten his dad to the climb! We set off steady away and met CM at the gate, we re-grouped with the other two fellas, then set off again, only for the young 'Kona' to overtake us in fit of speed. Now another gate and some mud, it was drier than last time, but still muddy up top, so set off down the trail and watch the stream and mud puddles! Now at the lane ready to fly down the descent in some moonlight. The descent was much dryer than last ride and more enjoyable, Grant wanted more water to show him the quickest line (must be mad!). Now over the bridge or through the river, 3 chose the river, some wet feet I think, then blast down the track and back to the cars. Into the pub for a beer, wine and a pudding (JB!), a great evening for a winter ride. Next week its Ings, meet near Watermill for Garburn.

24th Septmber 2009 - Staveley

First night ride of the season and 5 turned up, GA, JB, IF, NH and CT, JB bought the latest mag' test for new lights, LEDs and all that, in case anyone wanted to drool over what was on offer, whilst we got our eyes used to night riding. At least with Kentmere we know the route. We set off up Browfoot lane NNW, past Scroggs, along Fellfoot and up to tarmac climb, just to get warmed up, then we headed for the usual route to Kentmere Hall, a bit of water in The Puddle section, but then there always is! From Kentmere to Long Houses and heading for an encounter with HP, it was a little slippy in the damp conditions and with being dark and all that, down safely and we headed back via the road, all very civilised. No beers or chips this evening and next ride is Barbon.

20th September 2009 - GMBC

The Grizedale Mountain Bike Challenge, GMBC, was now in it's 9th year (and having raised over £30,000 for charity), a few brave soles decided to enter, after all it was only around 30 miles off-road and in Grizedale forest which we know well. A few folk went on holiday to avoid the decision to ride, whereas others thought the challenge was worth a bash. It's not a race...and when you start within the pack, it's like the London marathon, you don't get over the start line for a couple of minutes and then it's a bit crammed until it thins out. It's interesting people watching both in the car park and on the start line, some had full body armour, others wearing pink skirts (at least she was a girl) and a few single speeds in the mix. When you consider there were around 600 entrees, there would be a fair amount of $$$ lining up at Moor Top.
It was a glorious day with the sun cracking the slabs to start with clear blue skies, we parked up on the side of a forest road as directed and made our way to registration, here Grant got ride No. 5 (apparently it's based on surnames, Paul from Wheelbase got No.1 and he rode a 29er single-speed rigid bike!!) we then learnt that the ride involved 2 laps of a circuit, each circuit approx 16 miles, we think each lap was more like 18 miles! More food and drink required.
Then it's getting to 10.15 and we lined up a little way down the pack, waiting for the pre-ride instructions and joking about times, remember the course closes at 4pm, so we had plenty of time! Then 10.30 and the ride was off, of course we had to wait for all the riders to get going, but we were off and running. Whatever warn up you do it's just not enough, at least we have the same training with RADs rides! The course kept to the Coniston side of the forest NOT crossing the main road and avoiding Satterthwaite (to keep the locals happy). The course had plenty of steep climbs and some severe rocky descents, including the roller-coaster route through some trees which is very steep and catches loads of people out. There was also a section doing part of the North Face in reverse, it is the section from the visitor centre up the NF and it's a pain going the other way! So after the first 17 odd miles, we just had another lap to go! my first lap took 2 hours and 25 minutes just to give you an idea, it was not a fast ride, but it was fantastic weather and great views of the lakes and mountains.
The second lap meant more food and drink, although I lost one of my SIS fueled bottles during the first lap! and near the end I stopped and rested at a bench with a great viewpoint, although I could see the start/finish line and it was miles away, these challenges are very much a head game and so the second lap was better, although possibly slower! All complete and I got my ticket for finishing and then grabbed some food from the burger van and met up with JB, GA and family. A great day out, at least now it's all over! 17th September 2009 - Gilpin Bridge

For the end of Summer ride we had 11 turn out, there were also a bunch of other riders in the car park enjoying the good weather. A few of us had lights just in case, but we all wanted to get back in time for the traditional meal. The Gilpin Bridge Inn were happy for us to turn up around 8.30 and were to keep a table for 12. We set off for the usual circuit out over the new bridge up the wooded track along the side of the scar and then onto Witherslack woods to enjoy the downhill, here we decided to turn right for a couple of road miles before the uphill track through the woods. After re-grouping the usual Q:which way now? a few thought maybe another section, but the dinner table was calling and so we set off in reverse and so got in the sketchy descent in the dark woods. All back safe and ready for food. Inside the pub we rearranged the 4 smaller tables to make one large one and got 12 chairs laid out, Jim was due to arrive, but in the meantime Charlie ordered for him. The usual decisions...what to eat, I think 9 folk went for fish & chips, the old traditional, unfortunately the waitress came back with news that there were only 6 servings and so a fight nearly broke out over who was to give up their fish, luckily some brave soles found salmon on the menu which saved the day. Grant was talking salad and no pudding (but we knew he would succumb) but we really needed carbo food for the folk who were to do Grizedale challenge on Sunday. It was good nosh and we polished off all the chips and mushy peas. Then on to pudding, again decisions, nearly another fight over bread & butter, but there were the last two portions left, the others had thunder & lightening, more carbo loading!! All in all a very good night, now on to the winter schedule, next ride Staveley, Barley Bridge 24th September.

10th September 2009 - Elterwater for Loughrigg Terrace

Grant, Jamie, Ian, John, Chris M, Neil, Joel and CT met up at Elterwater, some travelling through roadworks and closed roads to get here! After a bit of fettling at the start we set off for the usual route, head out past the pub, over the road and up the hill via a few off-road paths, not too bad a start. Then past the YHA and down the side track overlooking great views of the tarn and fells, tee off right towards the caves, a bit o'fun and a puncture for CT, quick fix and onwards, along the under Loughrigg road and then the climb up and over the fell, getting darker, not too bad, then along the tarn, past the YHA gardens and back for the downhill over the fell, watch out for a tricky bit on the left hand side (just ask Jamie about the blood!), then back for beer and chips, not too bad for the end of summer. Next ride is at Gilpin Bridge for a quick sprint and a meal afterwards.

3rd September 2009- Barbon

The fab four turned out Grant, George, Jamie and CT, while everyone else just stayed at home and looked at the rain clouds...and OK some rain did precipitate in places, but mostly at the start and while we waited in cars! The fact that a couple brought lights was good, 'cause we did not really need them. Setting off at circa 6.35pm we started out all wrapped up, after a while we decided that Georges new bike parts were just too noisy...the chain was round the wrong guide piece, we changed that, now much quieter! The little testing rocky hill was a bit too full of wet rocks to ride all the way up, so we didn't. The next lane was a little full of puddles, but by the time we made the lane it was time to take off jackets, just. Up the lane and the sun came out, not quite sun tan strong but it was there! No messing get up that hill, Grant kept getting off (just like some others) but he apparently was just testing his new Goretex shoes!! Keep going up and over the hill, through the mud puddles, down the tarmac lane and left for the fun descent! Which involved some walking just to be safe, down to the river, over the bridge and on down the track. We were back at the cars by 8pm, no messing! Home for a shower, no expensive chips! Next ride is Elterwater.

27th August 2009 - Ings for Kentmere

It was a grey day with dark clouds forming, but it looked OK for biking, 10 riders turned up at the meeting place near the Watermill at Ings, one other joined part way round. There were a few rain drops in the air as we set off up the lane to Grassgarth then onto the bridleway, there were a fair few puddles with more to come. We were headed past Mickle Moss and yes more puddles, the gate was open half way along on the left of this route giving an unofficial detour past the main water-logged patch, we headed on and over to enjoy the descent into Kentmere church where we met another group of MTBers heading in the opposite direction. As this was the last Kentmere route for the summer we headed over Green Quarter towards Staveley Head with a view to do HP. Over Green Quarter it started to rain more and visibility got worse for those with glasses! Still we headed on and made it down to HP, at this point the wet rocks were a real test and there were a few fallers down at the bottom of HP where it is dark under the trees. Back on the lane and we headed to Browfoot and then the tarmac climb up the lane, here we bid bye to our 11th member as he headed home. At the top of the lane we decided that the narrow lane with wet rocks in near darkness was not a good idea and headed back via Grassgarth. All safe back at the cars, get out of the wet gear and headed home for a warm up. Next ride is Barbon (bring lights, just in case!)

20th August 2009 - Tebay for Borrowdale valley

Grant, Chris M, Ian, Jamie, George, Paul and CT turned out on a grey day threatening rain. Meeting up at a small layby just off the A685 Kendal-Tebay road, just south of the M6 junction. From here we set out along the Borrowdale valley to meet up with the A6, then after about 100 yds take a left turn heading south to meet up with a lane skirting Whinfell, after a few miles look out for a bridleway which heads up to the repeater station. At the bottom we wondered how many minutes it would take to the top, 10, 20, 30...? so we had to time it, albeit Jamie took it easy in granny and George tried middle ring (at least 'til the top cattle grid) anyway it takes from just under 20 minutes to 27 minutes or thereabouts. A bit windy at the top, so no long rest, quick chat then onward and downward, just needing to look out for bog and that funny left turn...which Jamie just found in time to save us going the wrong way. All back safely to the cars, all a little mud splattered but NO rain! Next ride is Ings.

13th August 2009 - Hawkshead

4 turned out (it would have been 5, but someone went elsewhere!), Neil may add some words later.

6th August 2009 - Hartsop for Ullswater shore ride

8 met up, John, Jamie, George, Neil, Chris M, Paul, Ian and CT. We set off for a anti-clockwise route with an extra leg, first though we go north and headed over Boredale Hause, this route really needs more warm up! and we met 2 bikers coming down, one riding with brakes on and one walking for safety. Then we took a right turn and headed over to Howe Grain, this involves a little more climbing, but you get a ride along the ridge and a great descent. Now just take the lane towards the shore near Sandwick and head west along the shore bridleway. This can get tricky in places George takes a tumble into the bracken, Neil falls over on the flat and Paul falls on something I'm sure he wants to forget! We make it all back safely, with a little road ride in the dusk. Next ride Hawkshead

30th July 2009 - Sedburgh for Dent

John, Neil, Charlie, Ian and CT met up in Sedburgh car park and this route with RADs was a first for Charlie! ...head south on the Dales Way route over the River Rawthey take the first left turn into Millthrop and then a quick right hand turn. Head out on the bridleway, through Gap Wood and down past Gate Manor, cross over the road and head down to the ford, choose the beck crossing or the bridge (built in 1999, so before that we all got wet feet!) we chose the bridge. Head on up the lane following the Dales Way route east to Gawthrop turn right and head UP a steep road climb for about 1 mile, then take the left hand bridleway, its a green lane along South Lord's Land, after another mile of stony track, turn left for an enjoyable rocky descent down into Dent. We stopped at the Sun Inn for chips and a beer, then set off at a leisurely pace back along the road and then retraced our steps to repeat the first section. Back atthe cars before dark! Next ride is Hartsop for Ullswater shore ride, it's great.

23rd July 2009 - Askham to High Street

Joel, Grant and George ventured out, apparently the open air swimming pool was closed, Joel has more details...watch this space.

16th July 2009 - Elterwater

7 riders met in the car park, Grant, Charlie, Neil, John, Paul, George and CT. We set off left out of the car park and along the lane, then right and uphill onto the bridleway offering the usual testing warmup! Up to Little Langdale and down to the ford, we went over the wooden bridge and noted a new sign, stating only 2 people at a time to cross it and you could see the deflection to one side, so beware. Then we headed right and past the cave and up and over to High Tilberthwaite, then left to the playground, then right Hodge close, now head along the lanes to Iron Keld a nice battling route where CT and GA did a bit of racing (well it beats an X-box). Once at Iron Keld taking the air, we thought we should do the new route to Sunny Brow, we knew roughly where it went and it was still daylight! so on we travelled up Iron Keld and then down the new route, now I think we headed on an extra loop down Pullscar plantation and so we had a nice cycle back along the lanes and past The Drunken Duck, keep going and back to Iron Keld, this time up and over the usual way and blast down to the road for a quick cycle back to the car park. Next ride is Askham.

9th July 2009 - Keswick for Skiddaw route

Grant, Charlie, Neil and George turned out, albeit George forgot his biking shoes, no matter he cycled round in shoes! Start out along the old railway to Threlkeld then up the lane past the Blencathra Centre. Here go north along the bridleway up the east side of the valley, turn at the end and come back down the west side, being part of the Cumbria Way, watch out for the rocky sections with steep drop offs! Come round past Whit Beck and then enjoy the twisty downhill, still part of the Cumbria Way, it's a Great descent. Next ride is from Elterwater.

2nd July 2009 - Ribblehead Dentdale trip

So 5 riders (Grant, Chris M, Neil, Charlie and CT) turned out for a "most excellent adventure", as a brief summary, we rode some of the following: Craven Way; Dales Way; Ribble Way; Cam High Road and the Pennine Way. It had been a cracking day and the sun was shining, a slight breeze helped start the evening off, we set off at 6.35pm (a good start) head back up the road and look for the bridleway which snakes under the viaduct towards Gunnerfleet farm, turn right and take the lane past Winterscales farm and under the railway track via a tunnel, now head north along the Blue Clay Ridge before crossing back over the railway via a bridge. Now head up Slack Hill over the stepping stones of which some were rideable. Ignore the left footpath to Wearnside and keep going on up the steady climb, now it was warm but great to get to the top and head around the hill and start heading down towards Dent, watch out for the rocks, but it was a blast, a bit sketchy at times on the corners but enjoyable. Head all the way down to Dyke Hall lane, then right along the road next to the river Dee, not much water flowing. Relax and enjoy the lanes, eat and drink ready for the climb to come. Look out for Artengill viaduct and head up Arten Gill bridleway, this is steep and steady to start and goes on and up, if you get to a gate first you can have a breather! At the top of Arten Gill moss, you have to turn right and look for the track to pick up the bridleway, the second part has been treated and is a great descent, very fast so just watch out for the bend at the end! Once at the road, it was only 9.15pm, still plenty of time, so we headed east to pick up the Ribble Way, another steady climb, but rideable so nice and easy, 30 mins later and we were at the top junction, Cold Keld Gate where it meets the Cam High road, it should be noted that many of these routes are Roman and hence are long and straight and some go downhill, like this one. First a little blast down and then stop to fix the first and last puncture, Chris M enjoying the descent! It is getting darker but still plenty of light. This descent has a few water gutters which can be fun! its a great downhill and the Gayle Beck was rideable as no water was flowing along it. Then it's a steady road ride back to the cars 9.15pm; 3 hrs 40 mins, not even as long as a Wimbledon men's final! A really sweet ride, much better if dry weather precedes the ride. Next ride is Keswick for Skiddaw route, as we can not park at the swimming pool, perhaps meet at next to the KMB units near behind the pencil museum.

25th June 2009 - Lowick for Parkamoor descent

The fab four turned out, CT, Jamie, Neil and Ian (who cycled all the way from home!), while others rested for the evening, getting ready for Mid-summers ride no doubt. Usual route, cross main road, over bridge turn left and warm up along the road, up the first hill (tarmac) and cross the first puddles to get onto the first downhill to Ickenthwaite, where we met 2 moto-cross boys heading out up the hill! Then we went along the lane until we detoured left to meet up with the fire road as Ian wanted to get to Mustard Hill and take the route along Herald Brow Pasture and thus enjoy the view over Consiton (if you want more get Ian to fill you in on route finding, basically be confident!) Once the views were taken in, we set off for the Main Show, the downhill, OK so there is some peddling, but it's well worth it. It was a 'dry ride' and so the rocks were kind and we all enjoyed ourselves, including an extra little detour for some. At the bottom of the hill we stopped off for a BBQ, fairly impromptu, although Ian had phoned ahead with an order for food, all I can say is well done chef. Thanks to Ian for the beer,chips, sausages, chicken, sauces, buns and fresh salad! (Charlie, where were you) this was a great way to end a summers evening ride and the sun gave us a purple haze sunset just an an encore, Great we must do this again. Next ride is from Ribblehead, park in the lay-by near the juction of B6255 and the Horton road, B6479; (GR 793767) basically go through Ingleton and head north for Ribblehead.

18th June 2009 - Ings for Garburn

A small band of 5 (CT, CM, Grant, John and Jamie) turned up at Ings, there were a few grey clouds, but not enough to put us off...yet. We were basically going to do the clockwise route, i.e. up Dubbs Road and on up Garburn and down into Kentmere. As soon as we started out a few rain drops started and while we went up Moorhowe Road the heavens opened, so anyone not already wearing waterproofs stopped and put them on, the rain and wind made it feel very cold, 'cause it was! but after a while we could see brighter skies and so continued on, by the time we made Garburn the rain had stopped and so we could concentrate on the climb! Not really warmed up by this time, so dabs along the way up, with a bit of walking, at the top gate we met one other rider and then we started the descent, GA and CM seemed to think the wet rocks maybe slippy and so talked themselves out of a clear run down! It's a tricky downhill, so watch out; then down to the church passing a few other riders going the opposite direction, then turn right and head up to 3 rivers, Grant was confused...until he remembered where he had left the car i.e. Ings not Staveley! Steady climb up and a little discussion at the first river, we decided to go by Mickle Moss as we were already wet, then down and head past The Heights and on past the farm for the tricky rocky tester, always a laugh! Now back to the cars and home to dry out. Next ride is from Red Lion, Lowick.

11th June 2009 - Walna Scar route

7 riders met up at the Hummer Lane forest access point, after a little wait we set off west down the fire road, CM spotted a bridleway on the RHS which runs down the valley, but most had ridden past it so we continued on until the right hand bend in the track, then you look for a marker on the LHS to find a route through the trees. This ultimately gets us down into the valley bottom where we start the fire road climb and I reckon this is about 200m on OS contours, now we head up the valley to Natty Bridge, cross the ravine and head up some boggy sections (there is no easy way) and work our way up to the old quarry buildings before starting the Walna Scar road proper. We started up at about 8pm this is about 420m height. It took Chris M 15 minutes to ride to the top at about 600m and he cleaned it, well done, CT was a little way behind keeping him honest (but dabbing on the way), everyone else was soon at the top, were we appreciated the effort and the views. Time for a quick snack and a wind proof top for the next descent DOWN Walna Scar Road, the rocks for the next section were large and loose, it is quite a testing descent, all down OK past Goatfoot crags and take the right turn, here there is a testing drop off, just to check nerves! Then down past the quarry, George taking it easy and on past the climbing hut, we saw 3 motorcross trials bikes going up (not sure they appreciate how easy it is to ride UP) but we enjoyed the down! back to Torver via the lanes and then the main road back to Hummer lane for the little hill climb to round off the evening. Back at the cars the midges woke up and so we packed up and headed home. Next ride is Ings for the Garburn trail.

4th June 2009 - Whinlatter trail

5 made it to Keswick, Neil, Paul, Grant, Charlie and CT, we met up on the old road opposite the B5292 near Brathwaite, with the view of getting the last bridleway down into Thornthwaite, So we set off up the B5292 towards the visitor centre, there are some optional MTB route, but we kept on the road as a steadier warm up! For details of the trails see http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/INFD-5GZLNY ,note there are also some U-tube clips, but they are not RADs ones...yet. We followed the north route which is about 6 miles, as the evening was cloudy and there was some drizzle it was fairly dark in the wooded sections and the tree roots were tricky, but there is a great single track section which climbs up the side of the forest with great views, unless you suffer from vertigo! There is a great downhill with table-tops and jumps at the end of the north trail ending up near the visitors centre. We did not have time for the south trail, so maybe next time we'll park nearer to the centre? Then we took the route down a fire road and joined the last bridleway down into Thornthwaite which is a great descent. Next week its Walna Scar, meet Broughton forrest entrance off Hummer Lane. 28th May 2009 - Satterthwaite for Grizedale

Charlie, Grant, Chris M, George, Neil, Doug, John, Jamie and CT would have set off on time had a passing biker not required some assistance, it seemed he had re-arranged his rear mech and John, Charlie, Neil gave some assistance to get him on his way, bravo! We set off into Satterthwaite village to take the uphill bridleway up Breasty Haw (a great RADs warm up) we also had company with a dad and his lad ably keeping up. This is an up and over route and the best part is the downhill past Bleaberry Hill to the lane. Here we went north up the lane for a short way before taking a right turn, quick climb and wait at the gate for Jamie to fix a flat, while we all got eaten alive, continue on and another downhill test to the next lane. Head right and work up the road until Hazelseat where you go right though the yard, past the buildings and keep straight one, this leads into a singletrack testing climb, more legs required! Again up and over and loom for a cross roads, go over the first fire road and then go right at the sign, continue on back to Satterthwaite then take the Sawry Bridge bridleway to get the route back to the cars down Moor lane to end an enjoyable ride. Next ride Keswick for Whinlatter trail, meet at Swimming pool, unless I email again with a new meeting place.

21st May 2009 - Broughton Mills for Dunnerdale Fells

8 riders met up at the Blacksmiths Arms; Charlie, George, Ian, Neil, Doug, Jamie, John & CT. Ian and John debated the route and whether clockwise or anti? So we set off down the lane (north) and left at the first junction towards Green Bank, then take a right turn up a bridleway, this is a bit of a lung buster so early in the ride (typical warm up!) it involved a few dabs along the way, take a slight left turn at a wall and run along a section called 'The Nursery' keep going under Great Stickle, moving west, enjoy the downhill single track past Black Stones and onto the road. Head north to Ulpha and just before the main road go right onto the bridleway, after a few hundred meters we ignored the track on the right and kept going through Birks Wood, then along parallel with the river Duddon, at Kiln bank take the road right and steadily ride uphill for a while. At the top we waited for Ian and Neil, who seemed to take an age, we thought they may have had gear trouble, but no they knew a shortcut and beat us to the cross roads of bridleways east of Kiln Bank Cross, here we headed south east under Raven's Crag, although this section was uphill it was a steady ride and good views, go round the crag at the southern end and work east past Carter ground, here you can take the lane or continue on the bridleway, we took the bridleway, around Jackson ground is a little boggy in places so watch out. Once at Stephenson ground we did a little section of wood and headed back along the lanes to the pub, 8.45 just time for some chips. Next ride is Satterthwaite for Grizedale.

14th May 2009 - Staveley for Longsleddale

Grant, Paul, Chris M, Jamie, Ian, John and CT set off up Hall Lane and then along past Scroggs Farm and Elfhowe to take the testing little climb back to Hall lane! Carry on up to Staveley head and keep going looking for the bridleway on the RHS, at this point the wind was getting up (nothing like the Walna scar ride but still windy) half way over we sheltered by a wall for a chat then continued down for the rocky descent, all safe now along the bottom of the valley, just negotiating sheep and lambs, everywhere, including one lamb playing rodeo on mummy sheep's back! Now approaching Sadgill get ready for the next climb, Chris M got the first gate, but there are 2 more, so a couple of dabs then re-group at the gate, shelter behind the wall, chat, eat and rest before the next rocky climb, some didn't even attempt the climb, fair play to those that did and even CT surprised himself by getting round 2 corners, one up for the hardtail! Get up over the top and re-group before the downhill, I'm sure Paul was taking it easy! Down at the bottom turn right, then come left and back along Low Lane where Chris M sighted a badger and a few of us saw it running away, quite fast considering it's bulk, it looked an older one due to colouring. Now it was only early but some folk had homes to go to, so we heaed back on the road a nice steady warm down. Next ride at Broughton Mills.

7th May 2009 - Hawkshead for Claiffe

8 riders turned up at Hawkshead, John, George, Grant, Charlie, Neil, Ian, Jamie and CT; we set off for the usual start towards Colthouse and early left turn down the lane to the road opposite the camp site, where one forlorn tent was just managing to stay up in the wild winds. Turn right and up the road until the bridleway on the RHS and the start to snakebite alley! and yes we had one puncture by the bottom, so we had a chat while Neil changed a tube. Then onwards towards Wray, only this time we went left along the lake shore and then right up the lane and the climb up to the forest track at the guide posts, here we thought we had time to go straight on and up the tester climb near Hollin Band Plantation, only Grant broke his chain (so we lost time!) on down the bridleway past Moss Eccles tarn and out at Far Sawrey, past the pub and climb up the bridleway for the great descent down Belt Ash Coppice to the lake shore, very enjoyable say all. Now head along the shore route to Fleming Wood and take the rock sets up to Scab Moss, here we went up the link route to the guide posts which meant pushing somewhat, over at the guide posts and now the downhill to Colthouse, now it's getting darker, so take it easy, all down safely and back to the cars. Over 10 miles and 2.5 hours another good ride. Next time it's Staveley, Barley Bridge for Longsleddale.

30th April 2009 - Lowick Common

9 turned up at the Red Lion, Lowick Bridge to what turned out to be a bright sunny evening, we set off with only 8 helmets GA just had his buff for protection! We headed west, south west past Lowick Hall turn right and keep going until a track called Long Lane to Kiln Bank, turn right at the farm and take the bridleway round Subberthwaite Bank to meet up on a tarmac lane heading for Tottlebank continue along the bridleway until the road usually it's straight over, but we saw one lone MTBer (white Tee shirt on a pink bike) and he carried on up the road, so we thought we would head up the hill with vague ideas about another bridleway route, Charlie mentioned looking at a map, but no need, just yet...onward and upward, we could not find the ideal bridleway and so to the dismay of Ian, who had just made it up the climb, we headed back down, we took a slightly different route down to the usual bridleway and continued on (looking at the map (after the event, Ed)there is another bridleway, but it was not easily seen on the ground, and it was shorter so stick to the usual). Then we went right and enjoyed the road downhill until Yeat House, where you turn right and take a deep breath for the climb, but at the top we go left heading for Green Moor and this is a really GREAT descent on singletrack, big smiles abounded! Now through Green Moor wood right at the lane and head on up for another climb, where we were looking for a right turn, but it is actually near to the top so more climbing then turn right back towards woodland fell and enjoy the singletrack and rocky testing routes, back via 2 fords to Subberthwaite and back on the lanes. It's a great route with a mix of singletrack, climbing and descending, a quick beer and chocolate crisps for some and home. Next ride is Hawkshead for Claiffe.

23rd April 2009 - Troutbeck

9 riders; Paul, George, Jamie ,Grant, Ian, John, Neil and his son in law, Charlie and Phil met at the layby near Troutbeck church just off the A592. The ride started by turning left on the A592 past the Limefit camping site and then taking a bridleway on the right after about 1/2mile. This track has rocky to start with and then turned into a farm track leading to Long Green Head Farm (not sure whether the lane up to the farm is a bridleway) where we passed through a gate and turned right on to the bridleway which passed Limefit Park for approx 2miles to the top of the hill. . After going through the gate we took the right fork down the rocky desent which takes us down to the A592 . On joining the A592 we turned left and used the track on the right hand side of the road with the spiking railing to cycle to the bridleway on the right at the top of the hill. Here we enjoyed the long sweeping downhill to the stream and then struggled to ride the up hill into the village . On meeting the road we turned right and road to the post office where we road up the hill to the seat with the fabulous view and then took the left turn down to the road. Here the group with the exception of Charlie decided to go anti clockwise down Mirk lane first and up Wain lane . Back at the top of Wain lane Charlie was waiting for us obviously quicker her way or is she just faster? She probaly 'powered on'. Grant then persuaded everyone to take the bridleway on the left leading to the seat at the top of the hill and back down to the post office where before reaching the first of the houses we took a different route by taking a right turn on to an a very dark single track down to the road from here we turned left and travelled through the village past our usual track by the church to a bridleway on the left that passed the Mortal Man Hotel and then back on to A592 where to turned right to go back to the cars. No pub visit, next ride Red Lion, Lowick.

16th April 2008 - Elterwater

7 turned up for the ride on a very nice evening in the lakes, John, Charlie, Paul, Neil, Jamie, Grant & CT. We headed off south to pick up the lane to Dale end, which involves a bit of a climb, even for a RADs warm up, we also passed 2 other bikers coming down the rocky path, but they were on road bikes and hence carrying for some of the way! Once into Little Langdale we headed west for Bridge End and the climb over Atkinson Coppice and down to High Tilberthwaite, here it's through the farmyard and left to the playground, then right and up to Hodge Close and cross the main road at Oxen Fell High Cross. Now head up to Iron Keld, passing a landrover on route, enjoy the climb...then get to the top for the downhill. Back down the road as the light was fading. A great way to spend an evening, finished off with chips and beer at the pub, best get one portion between two! next ride is from Troutbeck.

9th April 2009 - Crook

7 met up at the village/old school hall car park (not realising that there was an event on later that evening, maybe park elsewhere next time..?) so we set off east past Cockpit Hill, turn right and blast down the lane, take a farm track on the RHS to go near to Crook Hall, follow the bridleway west past Birk Moss and Hart Howe, at the lane turn right for a little while and then take a left turn down a gravel drive past Crook Foot and on up to Thorneyfields. Here we had a little chat about which way round, as the ups and downs just come in a different order....? so left it was and up the hill, at the top we headed down through the mud, noticing a cow which had recently given birth, with calf nearby, very spring-like! Down to the lane and straight over (looking right, left and right again!)Now down Craig lane, until the uphill, 'keep going' Grant, no good must walk a little and very rocky ground. At the lane turn left and blast down to the ford, here no one tried the water crossing! and now upward for the tarmac climb, granny ring and enjoy! Re-group at the top and mini-egg time, cheers Charlie, we also noticed the light getting dimmer, so onward past Cote Hill/Green hill and the scout camp, down the track in fading light and back to the road, re-group and turn lights on for the road ride back to the cars (where the car park had got loads busier!). A few of us enquired about a pub and thought the Sun Inn was mentioned, but in the moving of cars and driving off we all seemed to go different directions and no one was at the Sun!! Maybe we'll get a drink & chat next time as we are at Elterwater.

2nd April 2009 - Gilpin Bridge sort ride & meal

This is the last official winter night ride of the season, to be marked by the traditional end of season meal, a few folk thought it would stay light until 8pm and so would risk riding without lights, 9 were ready for 6.30 just about to set out when JP turned up and then CM. Neil had headCam, so watch out. So 11 set out (CT, Ian, Phil, Jamie, Paul, George + new helmet, Grant, John, Neil, JP, & CM) for the blast out and around Yewbarrow, enjoying two descents through the trees. All very enjoyable with the setting sunshine, almost summer! and great views over the fells and out towards the bay, whilst we passed 4 bullocks passing the time of day and probably wondering what on earth a bunch of MTBers were doing riding over their grass! Back at the cars and a guest appearence by Jim (part time retired biker) standing in for TG! into the pub grab a few tables to make 12 settings and enjoy the scoff, no puddings, we must be getting too........ (just fill in the space), we also discussed the next group event, over the weekend 16-17 May, Wild Boar 24, camping, social and MTB event!
Next ride is Crook/Winster from the village car park on the main Crook road.

26th March 2009 - Hawkshead for North Face route

5 riders (GA, JB, CM, NH & CT) met up in Hawkshead, ready to do battle with the elements, feeling the first drops of rain in a while and becoming breezy. We set off up the bridleway onto the north face trail to go round the ususal route. Grant & Jamie were using the ride as a shake down warm up for this Sundays Whinlatter Challenge ride, Good luck to Grant (representing RADs!). Following the days rain there were many puddles sitting on the trail and heading up from the visitors centre the first few sections of boardwalk have been removed and filled in, not sure what is going on at the moment. Half way round and my lights stopped working, and this was the one ride where I left my back up light in the car! and so I had to ride by Neils HID and borrow Jamies spare, thanks guys, it's no fun with no lights! We made it back for 9pm-ish no stopping, back home for a warm up and food. On Thursday 2nd April it's the last winter ride for 2009 at Gilpin Bridge and the end of winter meal, ready for the summer ride list.

12th March 2009 - Staveley

7 1/2 riders came out, 8 started after a little bit of tinkering, i.e. Grant needed new disc rotor, but the old one was not for coming off, so the old one stayed with some make shift pads, Charlie had to fit her brand new tyre again after it went flat and when Joel came he had to fit his chain, even through he dropped a small piece of chain link in the grass (to be lost forever) his mates came to the rescue with spare parts. So off we went past Scroggs farm for a change and the testing climb up to the lane, then on to Staveley head and 2 streams to Long Houses. At the road Joel had run out of lights and so headed back, the rest went on up Kentmere and down 3 rivers, well at least that is the local name for it, even through there may not actually be 3 rivers AND we did not actually cross 3 rivers....but we know where we went OK! Through the 2 rivers, feet wet and down the rocky patch all OK and back to the cars. No pub stop. As a few of us are heading to Scotland next weekend, I think we shall postpone the Elterwater ride, so the next ride is Thursday 28th March at Hawkshead car park.

5th March 2009 - Barbon

7 (Jamie, George, Paul, Charlie, Neil, Grant, Joel) set off up the hill from the church at Barbon, up Banneriggs Brow, over the cattle grid and the sharp right turn along the hillside and along Bents lane and then up Fellfoot road, which is technically a road on a map but I wouldn't recommend it in a car! At the end of the 'road' it was an uphill steady climb along Fell road to the top where the bridleway starts. Everyone steadily climbed to the top and took a break and wait for everyone to regroup. It was at this point that Joel had a technical, his bottom bracket bearings had ceased!
Grant thought this was a great training idea and laughed the whole thing off while Jamie offered advice that he should just carry on as it wasn't going to get any worse so we headed off up the bridleway towards the top of the fell where we met with two cyclists heading down which was unusual for a thursday night, we all watching with interest as they disappeared into the darkness and as one of them crashed.
It was a cold night and the water and mud clinging to our bikes was beginning to freeze, the downhill off the tops was particularly cold as we headed back on the road to the end of Fell Road for the final technical off road section. Everyone made it back to the road safely although Joel had a puncture which required three pairs of hands to get the tyre off the bike as it was frozen to the rim. We replaced the inner and then we were off to cross the river and the descent back to the cars, through the trees and up to the Barbon hill climb for the final descent. Finally, something wasn't right with Joel's brakes which combined with the cranky bottom bracket was making a noise like a clown bike but he managed to limp back to the church.
Once back at the car, three of us managed a swift drink in the pub where some cavers commented that they'd seen our lights earlier and wondered who could be crazier than them to go out at night, yep, that was RADs.

editors note... £150 repairs required to get the clown bike back on the road, so joel may or may not have the red nose and big shoes on next Thursday...

26th February 2009 - Troutbeck

On this wet night 6 riders Jamie, George, Paul Chris M, Grant and Neil met at the layby near Troutbeck church just off the A592. The ride started by turning left on the A592 past the Limefit camping site and then taking a bridleway on the right after about 1/2mile this track was rocky to start with and then turned into a farm track leading to Long green head farm where we passed through a gate and turned right on to the bridleway which we stayed on for approx 2miles to the top of the hill. This is the track is the one which we normally join from cycling through the Limefit campsite. The track after joining the Limefit fork looked so different as deer fences have been erected all along the left side of it. After going through the gate we took the right fork which takes us down to the A592 on the last very rock section of this track Chris M suffered a nasty fall on the wet rocks and leave it to him to explain his injury. On joining the A592 we turned left and used the track on the right hand side of the road with the spiking railing to cycle to the bridleway on the right at the top of the hill. Here we enjoyed the long sweeping downhill to the stream and then struggled to ride the up hill into the village with only Jamie making all of the climb. On meeting the road we went straight across and joined the bridleway that went up a driveway to join the next road where we turned left on to Wain Lane which provided an excellent if slippy down hill. Joining the main road we turned right and then right on to Mirk Lane where again Jamie was the only one to clear the difficult climb with Grant vowing to return on Sunday to conquer the climb. At the end of Mirk Lane we turned right and then left up the bridleway to Robin lane turning right and proceeding down hill to Troutbeck village taking the bridleway past to the church to A592 then turning right and back to the car. Just 2 hours in all and no one visited the pub. Next ride Barbon 5th March 09. Thanks to GT for the text.

19th February 2009 - Lowick for south Grizedale

8 riders met near the Red Lion and we headed north for the early tarmac uphill climbing test, then down to Ickenthwaite, Corker Lane and up through the fire roads of Thorney Stack and Satterthwaite Moor to come out at High Parkamoor. Here we all enjoyed the downhill technical rocky descent down Great Hill. It was a clear and starry night, with Coniston water glistening in the star light. No major mishaps, the odd slip and a slight puncture/leak in a tubeless tyre, then a quick dash for the finish line, or at least the virtual line. A quick drink in the pub and home. Next ride is 26 Feb, at Troutbeck, park in layby.

12th February 2009 - Far Sawrey for Claife

6 riders ventured out through the snow, most came from the south along the lake road and one came over the ferry (£3 the poorer!) We parked near the pub and set off north/NW direction, which is a little climb to start followed by a brilliant downhill. Then along the shore route and towards the basecamp but teeing off to Nor Moss, then up the fire road to the guide posts and 5 choose to take a little de-tour and go down one side of the V and up the other, it was a little testing navigating the roacks covered in snow and JP took a tumble, we re-grouped at the top and headed south past Moss Eccles tarn, it was great riding fresh snow and we all made it back to the cars. No pub stop and we wanted to see how the roads were, but it had not frozen and were OK to get home. Great ride! next Thursday is Lowick, meet at the Red Lion.

5th Frebruary 2009 - Satterthwaite

6 riders came out for a cold and crispt nite ride, CT, Chris M, Jamie, Neil, Joel & Grant, we decided we wanted to end with the downhill back to the cars and so headed off to Bogle Crag, up the tracks and round left to enjoy the descent into the visitors centre. Here we headed to the start of north face, but via the gully route which is technical especially going uphill! Then we started in the NF route and the steady climb up, re-grouping at the top, take some more fire road, NF and then we headed off to find the top of the Fell at Parkamoor, which invloved finding the tank tracks and negociating the muddles, which were not quite frozen enough. Then just as Grants lights were fading we had the downhill to enjoy and the last part of Moor lane has been treated, lets see how long it lasts? No pub treat so back home for a warm. The next ride is to be Far Sawrey, as last time only 2 made it out, so lets try again!

29th January 2009 - Elterwater Little Langdale

8 riders made it out, CT, CM, Charlie, George, Paul, Jamie, Ian & Grant, the weather was cold but no rain so OK to ride. After a little fine tuning the route went something like;- we headed north west along the river to the quarry then south through the trees at Sawrey Wood, turn left at the gate onto the lane to Dale End and down to the road to go left/right through Little Langdale, head down to the ford and take the bridge! head south (i.e. straight on and fork right) to the playground for a little break. Now through to Hodge Close and onto Oxen Fell to get to the NT plantation for the enjoyable downhill through the trees, at the bottom turn left and what a tester to get back up the hill, at Stang End tee off left and head back to Hodge Close and back past the playground to the ford. Left/right to Dale End and enjoy the rocky downhill back to Elterwater. The lasting memory is the slate rocks clattering about under the wheels sounding like broken plates or glass, either you need to be there to experience it or we need to record it for the future! A few folk sampled the pub beer, next ride is from Satterthwaite into Grisedale.

22nd January 2009 - Oxen Park

apparently 5 riders made it out (while I was on a course in a country further North, Ed) Grant said he wouldn't give me the route, I think he mean't couldn't, but at least he was there, somewhere...in west Cumbria... maybe we'll find out more later....GT sent a scibe as follows:
"5 riders Jamie, Chris M, Charlie, Grant and George turned up for the ride at Oxen Park it appears the meeting place has now changed from the village hall to the pub and the landlady is quite happy for us to use the car park.

Leaving the Manor House car park we turned right then immediate left down the lane and after about 1/2 mile at Blancrake Head take the narrow tarmac road on the right for a steep climb leading up to Abbot Park farm. Ride through the farmyard to join the bridleway after a short distance the track splits make sure you take the left fork and then continue along this track for around 1 mile before joining another track that is used by 4x4's and turn right on this track for an excellent downhill to High Ickenthwaite the lane had plenty of large puddles to disappear into but was great fun. Turn left here through the farmyard down the narrow lane to force falls and then up to Force fold here we take a detour turning left towards Grizedale and following the road past the old Satterthwaite school on the right before taking the bridleway on the left which provides another downhill back to below force falls. We carry on up the road to Force folds and just before the junction to turn left to Grizedale and take the bridleway on the right which after a slow drag up hill we go down an excellent track through fields to the road which was so good that Grant was whooping or something like that. Turning right on the road past the church on the left and then straight on at the next junction carrying on for approx 1/2 mile and then turn right up a very steep tarmac hill to High Ickenthwaite this seems to go on for ever at the top of the hill we turn left on to the bridleway and follow this route which provides some easy climbing and a good downhill before taking us back to the oxen park road where we turn right and proceed back to the pub. George encountered a punture on this section but managed to get back without having to make a repair. Several riders visited the pub in appreciation of the use of the car park and the fact that they wanted a drink."

15th January 2009 - Hawkshead for Claife

5 riders braved the damp weather, although as it so often turns out, it was looking worse than it actually was when riding a bike, although you do have to be prepared, cub scouts and all that. Neil, Grant, Ian, Charlie and Chris set off for Colthouse, then Scar House Lane, which was muddy and variable conditions, probably due to the recent freezing conditions, CT was slip sliding all over much to GA's amusement. Head along the road through Outgate to take a right hand bridleway through Spika Coppice, AKA "snakebite alley" But there were no punctures tonight! Now follow the road to High Wray and head for the forest track to base camp, then head up to the guide posts, where part shares in choc' chip cookies were taken, cheers Charlie. Here we took a little detour to enjoy the down and back ride around Long heights, going down was not too bad, although the recent ice and rain had changed the feel of the singletrack, then back up to find GA had a broken nipple!! Now we headed back to the guide posts and west heading back to Hawkshead, this track was quite wet and rocky and GA took a tumble, unseen by the rest of us, a tricky but interesting descent in the dark. Back to the cars to change and dry off and head home. Next ride is Oxen Park.

8th January 2009 - Ings

7 riders started the new year with a ride out of Ings, but where would it go...? so we headed up the lane heading south west, look out for the bridleway on the RHS, head along the track to the trees and enjoy the testing route, especially if you are JB and forgot his HID (we thought it may slow him down, but no..it did not!) you come out to a lane and head past Black Moss coming out onto the A591, cross over the road and up the lane. Come out at Mislet Brow, turn left and go uphill, then take the RH Borrans lane to come into the Kentmere route. Head the normal route, watch out for ice covered puddles, too many mince pies and you'll break through! Now just head to Three rivers and turn right and see how much ice is around. Head back via Brow foot, up the tarmac lane, left down past the farm and onto the narrow testing alley, what fun, especially if you have no lights..! All back down, no pub option this week. Next ride is 15th January at Hawkshead car park.

1st January 2009 - Barbon

5 riders turned out and met at Barbon, having the same idea as the local hunt, luckily the hounds headed elsewhere and left us the bridleways. It was a little cold (showing -6 in the car) but at least the sun was out. The usual route up the lane, right at the cattle grid, down the hill and look for the bridleway on the left hand side, this had ice on the climb, but was firm underfoot. At the top you head right and this track had more ice which meant tumble time! Come out to the lane at the end and start the uphill climb heading for the uphill track, at which point JB had a text from 'sicknote' crying off with a bug! who then truned off his mobile so he could get read our reply's!! Start the steady climb up, nice and clear blue skies. Work our way around the hill, looking out for ice puddles, taking care. Then down to the lane and along to the top track and head down to Barbondale, but the right hand track was just an ice chute so we headed left and made it down to the road. Last section cross the river and head through the trees, watching out for walkers. Back to the pub for hot soup and a roll. Happy New Year.
