30th November 2006 - Staveley for Kentmere

7 riders met up at Barley bridge, despite the rain, even Grant turned up! Paul (aka new dad) also turned up, apparently to collect some beer he won in a bet with Jim, at least they were baby bottles! Jamie turned up having ridden from home in the rain, madness! Then Inge turned up in the car, apparently Jamie forgot his thermals or something.... Joke!
Paul also entertained us with his light show -he had formulated fairy lights on his bike to look like a Christmas tree! (challenge Joel).

There was some debate at the start, which way to go? as it was a tad wet, most views were to stay in the cars and drink Paul’s beer, but we set off over the bridge up the tarmac track and the usual anti-clockwise route down to Long houses along the road to Kentmere Church, up the track and over fell, to take the route down thru' the 2 fords. Where at the first ford crossing I got a wet foot and then going down the grassy hill I slipped thru' a muddy section and fell off into the mire! A new grippy front tyre is required!
Down the hill thru' the second ford and past the rocky descent, past the houses turn right thru' the gate and on to the farm and up the little testing climb. Charlie challenged Paul to a bet that if she could clean ride the last little climb, she could win half the beers? When we got to the last little climb, which used to be a very technical tester, we found that it was being graded with compacted hardcore material for vehicle access and so it was easily rideable! Paul thought that something was up, so he kept all the beers.

Back at the cars and everyone wanted to go home for hot baths or 40 winks, so no pub time! Next time we may also get some of Longsleddale in, if the weather is kind... Next week: 7th December it's Britannia Inn, Elterwater - Loughrigg Terrace.
