It had been a gorgeous day in the sun, not summer temperatures but spring sunshine never the less, so a bike ride was in order and it was a Thursday :) We met up at Waterhead car park (free after 6pm), George, Jamie Mac, Grant, Jamie B, Joel and CT, JP was sort of going to lead the ride but was a tad late so we had a plan in hand;) Head out of town along coffin route start but head down to Pelter bridge and up to the caves (this avoids the steep early climb from under Loughrigg which we traditionally do), we passed the other car park and there were another load of MTbers getting ready too. We also had a helicopter of some sort buzzing around overhead, it was dark, no searchlight so not sure if just on night manoeuvres , anyway they were not bothering us and I don't think we ended up on the late night news:) So get to the top of Red Bank, meet a lone MTBer and he heads off and we detour around Joels hill (you know, the one he cleans on the fatty;) nice and steady up and down, then drop into Elterwater. No time for the pub on up through the quarry, climb the technical route through the wood, right at the gate and down to the ford, turn right and amble along, climb up and rest at the junction past hall garth, which way now...JP was not going any further, so flapjack (thanks JB) and jelly babies (Thanks George). Then ride round Little Langdale tarn and back via Dale End to Elterwater. Here we split up Jamie Mac, Grant and JP went back along the river and road, where as Jamie B, George and CT climbed back up the hill over the common, past the YHA and back to the caves then to Ambleside, when we got back it was10ish and the others had scarpered. Jamie had wanted a quiet ride as he was guiding at the demo weekend, so how many miles....actually it was over 18 miles! Sweet.
